To be entirely honest, it was only a week ago that my wife and I started watching Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. To be even more honest than that, it was my idea in the first place. We were trying to find something we would both enjoy, but we couldn’t seem to settle on anything. I was down for a movie that blasted the screen with bullets and explosions, and she was more than happy with watching another rerun of The Big Bang Theory. We had to make a compromise.

Rebecca Bunch

Rebecca Bunch, played by Rachel Bloom, is a successful lawyer living in New York City. She is single, heavily sleep-deprived, extremely overly energetic, out of love, and desperately in need of something to get her out of a spiraling depression. The meds that she takes only stave off her sadness temporarily. When her boss offers her a promotion that most would kill for, Rebecca is overcome with emotional strain and a major lack of sleep, and she back-heels into a jog out onto the busy streets of New York. In her overanxious, almost-hyperventilating state, she sees Josh Chan – her ex-boyfriend from high school.

Josh Chan

Who is this Josh Chan? For one, he is Rebecca’s first (and only) love. He is also the first (and only guy) to have broken Rebecca’s heart by breaking up with her at the end of summer camp when they were teenagers. At the beginning of the show it’s not clear what Josh is doing, but he makes it clear to Rebecca that he is leaving New York to go back to his hometown in West Covina, California. Josh is dating Valencia, a super hot, yoga instructor that has everyone turning their heads, including Rebecca.

Cringe-worthy Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

This show is not just a comedy series, or just a drama series, it is a dark, satirical musical series too. Personally I’m not really a fan of musicals, but when I realized just how smart and downright hilarious the songs were, I was hooked. The songs the characters sing will have you rolling on the ground, pounding your floor with your fist. For me it was the blatant honesty of the satire that made me fall in love with Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. One song, as an example, is called “Face your fears.” Some of the lyrics include, “If a bear runs at you in the woods, don’t run away. Look it deep in the eyes, put your hand on its chest and say “Bear, I’m not afraid!” If you’re in a burning building and smoke is everywhere. Keep calm, take a deep breath, and stay right there.”

Why We Love Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

You mean besides for all the reasons I’ve already mentioned? Rebecca is both a girl we’ve all met or a girl we’ve all been. Yes, even as a guy that makes sense to say and you’ll understand why when you watch the show. This is a dark comedy about love and obsession, success and failure, and all that comes with it – including making out with your eyes open to spy on your crush; including kissing your crush’s girlfriend in an attempt to get closer to him; including washing all your anti-depressants down the drain with the hope of becoming happier – to name a few.

Check Out The Trailer

Take a quick look at the trailer and make a decision. If you’re looking for an opinion, I’d say mine is “watch it.”
